A JOURNEY OF UNITY, SACRIFICE AND HOPE
My name is Neha Agarwal, and I am an international student from India studying in Vietnam. When I first arrived, I thought I was simply coming here for education—for lectures, exams, and a degree. But what I found was something far more meaningful. I found a story—a powerful story of courage, sacrifice, and unity that has changed the way I see the world.
Standing before the statue of Bác Hà, I often feel a quiet sense of reflection. His words—“Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom”—are not just something written in history books. In Vietnam, they feel alive. They are reflected in the lives of people, in the pride of the nation, and in the peace that exists today.
The liberation of the South and national reunification on April 30, 1975, is not just a historical event—it is deeply emotional. Behind that victory were countless sacrifices. Many people lost their families. Many soldiers left home and never returned. There were mothers who waited, children who grew up without parents, and dreams that were never fulfilled. And yet, even in those painful times, there were voices that rose—voices strong enough to make the enemy question, voices filled with courage and belief.
Figures like Nguyễn Thị Định showed extraordinary strength and leadership, while Hanoi Hannah (Trịnh Thị Ngọ) used her voice in a way that left a lasting impact. These individuals remind us that the fight for freedom was not only fought with weapons, but also with determination, intelligence, and spirit.
As a student living in Vietnam, I have come to understand that these sacrifices are not forgotten. They live on in the way people value education, peace, and growth. Sitting in libraries, watching students study with such dedication, I feel inspired. Here, learning is not just about personal success—it is about responsibility.
Reading has become something more meaningful to me. Through books, I connect with Vietnam’s past—its heroic and sometimes painful history. And through knowledge, I see how the younger generation is continuing the journey, building a future that those before them dreamed of.
Today, Vietnam stands strong. It is a country that commands respect—not through fear, but through its resilience and its story. Its rich culture, its heroic yet difficult past, and its continuous growth make it truly remarkable.
What touches me the most is the people. The older generation, who endured hardship yet never lost hope. And the younger generation, who are full of dreams, energy, and determination to build a stronger and more beautiful Vietnam.
As someone who was not born here, I did not grow up with these memories. But living in Vietnam has allowed me to feel them in my own way. I have learned that pride is not limited by nationality—it can grow from understanding, respect, and connection, from shared human values, from empathy toward the sacrifices of others, and from the inspiration we draw when we witness a nation rise with dignity and strength.
This connection has deepened over time. It lives in the friendships I have built, in the stories I have heard, and in the quiet moments when I reflect on how far this country has come. It teaches me humility, reminding me that peace is never ordinary, and that progress is always earned. It also inspires me to carry these lessons beyond borders—to value unity, to respect history, and to contribute, even in a small way, to a better world shaped by knowledge, compassion, and shared hope.
I came to Vietnam to study. But I also learned to feel. To feel the weight of its history. To respect the strength of its people. And to admire a nation that turned sacrifice into unity, and hardship into hope.
